If you are reading this, you are most likely a young girl (or boy, makeup doesn't discriminate and neither do I) that has just joined the beautiful world of cosmetics. I want to be the first to say, welcome!
If you were anything like I was when I was 11 and begun wearing makeup, you probably know next to nothing about what you're putting on your face. (Or maybe you know more than I did. I didn't have YouTube gurus and Pinterest to teach me. You do.) Here are some tips you should always remember when applying your makeup that might just save you from looking back at your photos from middle school thinking "I thought that looked good?"

- Go easy on the eyeliner.
- Never apply powder directly to the skin.
When applying powder to your face, it works kind of like a Swiffer duster. It picks up all the oil on your face. Soon after application, you will start to feel a sensation similar to when you have a dried mud mask on your face (a feeling all women know.) This is happening because it sucked any moisture out of your skin. Always apply a foundation, moisturizer, or primer before applying a powder to your face to prevent dry skin.
- Find the right foundation for your skin tone.
The art of finding the perfect foundation for your skin can take years to master. If you go a shade too light, you'll look like a ghost. If you go too dark, you'll look like you should be dancing in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. To prevent this from happening, go to a makeup store (Ulta Beauty, for example) and ask an employee to help you find the right shade.
- Always remove your makeup before going to sleep.
This is especially important as a teen because younger skin is more prone to acne. Leaving makeup on your face will clog pores and cause pimples. Make sure to cleanse and moisturize before hitting the sack. (Do all people say that or is it just a Utah thing?)
- Experiment with your look.
There is no better way to learn about the world of cosmetics than to just simply experiment! I remember once when I was in the 8th grade I decided I wanted to try lip gloss on my eyelids so they "looked shiny." I definitely don't recommend it now, it was sticky and gross. But who knows, I could have possibly started a trend! Don't be afraid to wear blue eye shadow or hot pink lips. If it doesn't look right you can just remove it. Have fun with your makeup!
